B. Docktor Photography at 510 Warren Street Gallery in Hudson, NY

Closing Party: February 25, 2018 at 5pm

It’ll be the last day of the exhibit, and I’m going to project photos from my recent trip to Vilcabamba, Ecuador.
You’re invited to come see the work, meet new friends, and enjoy some refreshments.

Sunflowers and Morning Mist

This show features landscapes and animals of my beautiful area Columbia and Dutchess County, NY. Also showing the start of a new project about places and people in the Hudson area that most people don’t get to see.

The idea for this project came to me as I was driving past the old powerhouse of Universal Atlas Cement just south of Hudson on Rt. 9. I’ve passed that place hundreds of times, but never got a good look at it because of No Trespassing signs. So I started calling around to try to get access to places I’d never seen or photographed. I also wanted to use the project as a way to feel closer to Hudson, and to meet and document people and places I’m curious about. We all know Hudson has lots of great architecture, antiques, art and food. But my aim is to find what most of us don’t see, and to feel more deeply connected to the vibrancy, creativity, and diversity that makes this place alluring. I hope to expand the reach of this project into the wider Hudson Valley. If you know of, or own an interesting place that you’d like to have me photograph, please get in touch: bd@bdocktor.com

AUGUST 28 – SEPTEMBER 30, 2017

B. Docktor is known for being a long-time documenter of the Columbia/Dutchess  County area—not just the beauty of our landscape, but also of our people, our farms, our animals, our towns, our celebrations.

In this show, B is featuring some of her favorite places—Coach Farm in Gallatin, the views from the top of Winchell Mountain, Bash Bish Falls, Chrysler Pond, and animal portraits from Coach Farm, Spruce Ridge Alpacas, and Salmon Kill Farm.

Winchell Mountain Elm Tree After the Storm was made at the end of long, rainy, gray day. We’re looking toward Millerton, NY and clouds are sitting in the valley that Route 22 runs through.

A favorite Ancram place is Thompson Finch Farm. B has been eager to find a way to contribute to the campaign to help save the treasured farm for future generations. She has been photographing the farm and will create a set of collectable greeting cards and small prints featuring those images. All proceeds from the sale of these prints will be donated to the Thompson Finch Farm Collaborative, which includes the farm, Columbia Land Conservancy, and Equity Trust. About her work, B says, “I’ve always aspired to make images that make you stop and say, —Wow, I feel like I was there! In addition to making images of nature and our glorious region, I love to photograph people and pets, weddings and family gatherings. Whatever I’m photographing, I’m always looking for that kernel of magnificence, that essential moment, that just right composition. The joy is in seeing the beauty and getting to share it with you.”

Main Street Magazine’s Photo Gallery is at 52 Main Street in Millerton, NY.

New Show at 510 Warren Street Gallery in Hudson, NY

Opening reception this Saturday, May 6, from 3-6.

This month, I’ll be showing images of dogs and dancers–in motion!

All my life, I have been captivated by great dancers, athletes, bodies in motion, watching muscles moving, and great photographs of sports and performance. When I was in high school, I put up dark corkboard on the wall next to my bed, and covered it with my favorite images from Sports Illustrated. I have had the good fortune to photograph Parsons Dance a few times at The Joyce Theatre in NY, and this image of Eric Bourne, Steve Vaughn, and Miguel Quinones has given me lots of pleasure over the years.

NEW DOGGY VIDEO

Because I love capturing “the essential moment,” dog photography is one of my favorite kinds of work. Movement, expression, humor, love–dogs have it all. Here’s a link to a new short video piece with some of my beloved characters.

Dashing Star Farm Fin Sheep

Fin Sheep at Dashing Star Farm, Millerton, NY. Framed photo on canvas, 12×15 by B. Docktor

This month’s show runs from March 31-April 30.

I’ll be showing some newly framed pieces. At top, a chicken from Salmon Kill Farm in Salisbury CT, where I had the pleasure of creating images for their new website.

Above, Fin sheep from Dashing Star Farm in Millerton looks so good in this old frame which had previously been on one of my father’s paintings. It looks better on these sheep! Below, I realized that the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse image would fit beautifully into this old frame that I’ve had sitting around for years wondering what to do with it.

Photographer B. Docktor Opens New Show

at 510 Warren Street Gallery in Hudson, NY

FEBRUARY 4 – FEBRUARY 27, 2017

OPENING RECEPTION 3-6pm, FEB 4

HUDSON (NY), JANUARY 24, 2017: For her upcoming show in Hudson, from February 4 to February 27, the photographer and maker of “moving images,” B. Docktor, will feature new landscapes—all local—as well as selections from her iconic images of animals on the area’s picturesque farms. Docktor is known for being a long-time documenter of our region—not just the beauty of our landscape, but also of our people, farms, animals, towns, and our celebrations.

B trained in photojournalism with a B.S. from Syracuse University, and before that had her eye tuned to beauty by her father, the illustrator/artist, Irv Docktor. “I appreciate that I have inherited a very artful way of seeing and composing photographic images,” B says, “and I grew up revering Life Magazine and Sports Illustrated. I love sports and—being very agile myself—I’m always trying to get myself in the right place at the right time! I seek to emulate the great photographs of those magazines, while infusing my images with an artful eye. I always aim to find that essential moment, no matter what I’m photographing.”

Using what she calls her “‘moving images’—“in both the physical and emotional sense,” she interjects— B is also presenting an innovative video presentation for the gallery’s front window that will showcase the full breadth of her work’s subjects. She calls this video project “a visual love poem to our area, featuring the beauty of our land, the glory of nature and animals, and the diverse celebrations of its people. Many people know me as an animal photographer, or maybe they see my landscapes in exhibits, in commercial spaces, and online. That said, I photograph people the most—always have and always will! As these rarely get exhibited, except on my website www.bdocktor.com—I’m grateful to have this opportunity to exhibit my favorite “moving images” of people as well as the natural world at 510 Warren Street Gallery.”

B. Docktor’s show, Moving Images, runs from February 4 through February 27, 2017, with an opening reception on February 4 from 3 to 6pm. For further information, contact B. Docktor by telephone at 518-329-6239 or via her website, www.bdocktor.com. The 510 Warren Street Gallery can be reached at 518-822-0510, or visited online at www.510warrenstreetgallery.com.
